A puzzle
A quick puzzle for you. It'll be relatively easy if you've seen Die Hard 3 :)
You have an unlimited supply of water. you've a 5-litre jerrycan and a 3-litre jerrycan. You've to get 4 litres exactly. How?
You're allowed to dump water, whatever you want, so long as you get 4 litres.

ReplyDeleteSo fill the 5-litre jerrycan, fill the 3-litre jerrycan from the water in the 5-litre jerrycan, which will leave 2 litres in the 5-litre jerrycan.
Now empty the 3-litre jerrycan and pour the 2 litres thats in the 5-litre jerrycan into the 3-litre jerrycan.
Re fill the 5-litre jerrycan and using this water fill the 3-litre jerrycan (2 litres already in there so you'll use one litre from the 5-litre jerrycan to fill it), this will leave 4 litres in the 5-litre jerrycan

ReplyDeleteFill the 5 – pour it into the 3, leaving 2 in the 5.
Empty the 3.
Pour the 2 from the 5 into the now empty 3 leaving 1 empty.
Fill the 5 again and pour 1 from the full 5 into the two-thirds full 3 leaving 4 in the 5!
